Sandstone cliffs framing a secluded stretch of Cupecoy Beach with turquoise water

Cupecoy

Clifftop condos, big sunsets, and a beach that comes and goes with the tide

Cupecoy sits at the quiet western edge of the Dutch side, where Sint Maarten runs out of island and meets the French border. It is condos on sandstone cliffs, some of the best sunsets around, and a beach tucked under those cliffs that shrinks and grows with the tide. There is no town here and almost nothing within walking distance, so it rewards people who rent a car and want calm over convenience.

Known for

  • Sunset views from the cliffs
  • Upscale condo and self-catering rentals
  • Cupecoy Beach beneath the sandstone cliffs
  • A clothing-optional stretch at the far end

Should you stay here?

Best for

  • Couples and quiet-seekers with a rental car
  • Self-catering condo stays
  • Sunset lovers

Know before you book

  • There's no town here, so without a rental car you're stuck for meals and groceries
  • The beach narrows to almost nothing at high tide and after big winter swells
  • The sandstone cliffs erode and drop rock, and the closed-off zones are closed for a reason

Getting there

About 10 minutes by taxi or car from Princess Juliana Airport, heading west toward the French border. A rental car is close to essential here; bus service along the main road is limited and leaves a walk down to the condos.

Common questions

Quick fact

Is Cupecoy a good area to stay in St. Maarten?

Cupecoy is good for couples and self-catering stays who want quiet and great sunsets and have a rental car. It's a poor fit without a car: there's no walkable town or dining, and the beach can shrink to nothing at high tide and after storms.
