On the island now

This week on St. Maarten and St. Martin

A genuinely quiet stretch of high summer. Two cruise calls land midweek, Rhapsody of the Seas on Tuesday and Allure of the Seas on Wednesday, and the port sits empty the other five days. The week's rhythm comes from the standing nights: the Tuesday pop-up market and daily live music at Tortuga, Wine Down Wednesday at Mix at Oceans, and happy hour on the Philipsburg boardwalk. The French side's Staycation promotion rolls straight into August, and next Monday, August 3, is August Monday, the famous beach party a short ferry hop away on Anguilla. Every date and source is below.

This week's pick

The five quiet beach days

With only two cruise calls all week and the port empty the other five days, this is the rare stretch of high summer when the big-name beaches run calm. Pick a no-ship day (Monday, Thursday, Friday, or the weekend), go early, and Mullet or Great Bay is close to yours. You can read the port schedule on this page to plan around the crowds instead of into them.

Cruise ships in port

Pulled from the Port St. Maarten schedule portal on July 27, checking both the July and August views since the week spans two months. Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday show zero ships, so five of seven days run quiet. The next calls are Monday August 3: Rhapsody of the Seas and Independence of the Seas.

Week-ahead weather

The Met Department's forecast, issued Monday July 27 at 6:00am, runs only through Tuesday morning: fair to partly cloudy with isolated showers by day and overnight, east to southeasterly winds at a light to moderate 4 to 15 mph, smooth to slight seas of 1 to 4 feet, and a high near 33C (91F). A patch of Saharan dust settles over the island overnight, so anyone with allergies or a respiratory condition should take it easy. That is a short window into a longer week, and it is peak hurricane season, so keep half an eye on the tropics. For the daily forecast, check meteosxm.com.
