Places That Tell St. Martin's Story

Forts, salt ponds, monuments, museums, estates, and archaeological sites hold pieces of the island's past. This is a research index, not an access guide.

Documented history

Read the place, then check the visit

A historic name on a map does not tell you whether a site is safe, public, interpreted, or open today. This index keeps important places discoverable while the History section carries the chronology. Directions, hours, fees, permissions, and accessibility appear only once a dated direct check exists.

What this index holds

The records below group into forts and colonial defenses, civic places and boundary memory, monuments and public memory, museums and collections, estates and landscapes, and archaeological records. Each carries what the research record supports and nothing about visiting that has not been checked.

The archaeological records are the one group that stays deliberately vague about location. Publishing a precise position for a site that is not protected on the ground can put it at risk, so location detail waits on the responsible heritage authority. Nothing here encourages artifact collecting or off-trail access.

Questions

Can I visit every place listed here?

No. Inclusion means the place matters to the research record. It does not mean the site is public, safe, open, or suitable for an independent visit.

Why are exact directions missing?

Access and preservation come first. Directions appear only once a responsible local authority or site manager has confirmed that public visiting is appropriate.
