Friar's Bay

Three beach venues, and only one keeps predictable hours

Friar's Bay is unusual for a small French-side beach in having three restaurants on the sand: Friar's Bay Beach Café, which is the French beach-lunch one, Kali's Beach Bar, which is Caribbean, and 978 Beach Lounge, which is Creole. All three are evidenced as currently trading.

The useful reporting is not on whether they exist but on whether they will be open. 978 Beach Lounge is listed by the tourist office as open daily 10:00 to 21:00, run by the same operation as 978 Sanctorum Lounge in Rambaud. That is the only firm published schedule of the three, which makes it the safest bet for a walk-up.

Friar's Bay Beach Café has no hours on its listing and a March 2026 visitor who drove out on a Tuesday found it closed despite the website saying open, with the explicit advice to call ahead on +590 690 49-1687. The same reviews call it fairly pricey, cite 8 euros a litre for water, and one reports prices up more than 25% year over year. Reviewers also report that chairs are gone by noon and that diners get charged full price for sunbeds even while eating in the restaurant.

Kali's publishes no hours at all on its own site. So: call before you drive the bumpy road.

Kali's since 1980, and a full moon party nobody can currently confirm

Kali's Beach Bar states it was established in 1980 and has been a fixture for visitors to Friar's Bay and Happy Bay ever since. The full moon party is what it is best known for: the beach is described as particularly recognised for the full moon evenings Kali hosts, with bonfires and reggae bands.

Here is the honest part. We could not establish whether the full moon parties are currently running on any regular schedule. Kali's own website carries no events page, no calendar and no hours, and its page was last modified in November 2024. Every current mention of the parties is generic and undated, and several sources plausibly copy each other. The most detailed open description we found dates to 2011, six years before Irma.

That is exactly the recycled-content trap: a real institution, described in the present tense by sources that may all be repeating pre-Irma copy. Do not plan a night around it without checking Kali's Facebook page or phoning +590 690 49-0681 first.

This is the trailhead, and it changes how you use the beach

The single most practical fact about Friar's Bay is that it is the only realistic way to reach Happy Bay.

The trail starts at the far right end of the beach as you face the sea, or equivalently by walking north past Kali's and the beach café until orange arrow markers appear. Walk time is consistently reported as 10 to 15 minutes each way across four independent sources. The path is uneven and rocky in parts, has no shade, and gets slippery after rain, so proper sandals or sneakers beat flip flops, though plenty of people manage it in flip flops when it is dry.

Because Happy Bay has no toilets, no fresh water and no reliable food, Friar's Bay functions as its base camp. Use the facilities here, buy the water here, and understand that your car is going to sit in an unattended dirt lot for several hours while you are physically out of sight over a hill. Leave nothing in it.

Friar's Bay is not the nude beach. Happy Bay is

Topless is legal and normal here as on every French-side beach. But Friar's Bay is a family and local beach, and sources state explicitly that it is not a nude beach and maintains family-friendly standards.

The clothing-optional beach is Happy Bay, over the hill. Listicles that treat Friar's Bay and Happy Bay as one destination end up implying Friar's Bay is clothing-optional, which it is not.

Getting there: north out of Marigot on the road toward Grand Case and turn off at Cripple Gate, where the turn is marked by signage for Friar's Bay Beach Café. It is roughly 5 to 10 minutes north of Marigot, with Grand Case another 10 minutes beyond, which makes this the easiest French-side beach to slot into an afternoon between the two. The access road down is repeatedly described as bumpy, and it is passable in a standard rental car. A shared minibus can drop you at Cripple Gate, leaving a walk down, but realistically this is a car or taxi beach.

One thing worth knowing about the snorkeling: it is modest but real, with tropical fish and some coral. It is not a marine reserve site and it is not in the class of Creole Rock or Pinel. Set your expectations accordingly.
